4 Ways for Families to Volunteer on Earth Day

Ready to make the South Platte River more beautiful? Meet up at City of Cuernavaca Park on Saturday, April 22, 9 a.m. to noon, when staff members from The Greenway Foundation will guide families of all ages in picking up trash and removing weeds and debris. The hour-long project is followed by games and crafts. Lunch is provided at this free event—just make sure to register online in advance.

Trail Construction

Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado and the City and County of Denver throw down for Mother Nature on Saturday, April 22 with their First Creek Trail Construction event at Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge. Volunteers age 10 and up are called on to help construct 6,600 feet of new trail by hauling and spreading aggregate material. The job is ranked easy-to-moderate in difficulty, and runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Harvest and Planting

Hosted by Castle Rock POST Partners, this year’s Earth Day Harvest & Planting kicks off on Saturday, April 8 at 9 a.m. at Memmen Ridge Open Space. Families will gather to cut willow branches along Sellars Gulch. Harvested stalks will be replanted in Philip S. Miller Park to prevent soil erosion. The event runs until noon, and no previous training is required. If it rains, the event will be held on Saturday, April 22 instead.

Clean-up Party

Saturday, April 22, park at Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site at 8:30 a.m., and take a shuttle to Garden of the Gods, where you and your clan can register to clean up the garden. When the work is done, to celebrate our Earth while inspiring stewardship, Garden of the Gods is presenting booths, vendors, and activities—including a chemical magic show, American Indian dancers, and live falcons.
