My mom knits just about anywhere: the DMV, on her lunch break, and even in the car—but no to worry, she never knits and drives. Until I started knitting myself, I couldn’t understand why she couldn’t leave her knitting at home. This relaxing, hands-on activity is no longer a hobby relegated to grandmas, and has become popular among younger generations in the past few years. Check out these five local spots that offer knitting classes for kids and teens.

Yarn Shoppe Studio

Yarn Shoppe offers private knitting classes for kids and parents. Reservations are required, so Yarn Shoppe can assess the age and ability of each child to provide them with the appropriate instruction needed. The class is $45 per person, which includes knitting needles, yarn, and patterns, and participating students get 10 percent off any additional knitting supplies. Many parents come to class with their kids to knit together, but parents are not required to participate. 1635 Tremont Place, Denver. 

Legit Knits

Experienced knitter, Louise Fordyce, guides a free class on the fourth Monday of the month at Boulder Library, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Kids ages 11 to 16 are welcome to join, as are first-timers, experienced knitters, and tweens just wanting a place to hang out. All materials are provided, including snacks. 1001 Arapahoe Ave., Boulder. 

Ewe And Me

Looking for a more personalized class for your child? Ewe and Me offers one-on-one classes for kids, with parents welcome to join. Students buy their materials separately, but receive a 10 percent discount from Ewe and Me with patterns and instruction provided. Ewe and Me recommends size eight needles for first-timers, who must be eight years or older to attend. Reservations can be made online. $25 for a one-hour class. 1045 K Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs. 

Fingerplay Studio

Fingerplay Studio’s four-week class is focused on one-on-one guidance as newbies learn how to knit, purl, and everything in between. The first class is on April 10, and continues every Tuesday for four weeks, from 4 to 5 p.m. The class is $50 and does not include materials, which you can purchase through Fingerplay Studios for a small fee. Woolly Works

Woolly Works Knit Shop in Colorado Springs offers a weekly Saturday Learn to Knit class from 1 to 4 p.m. for $20. Owner Edith says the only age requirement for kids is to have an attention span that lasts an hour. Supplies are less than $10 and can be purchased through Woolly Works for a 10 percent discount. Class sizes are small, so call ahead to confirm your child’s spot. 9 E. Bijou St., Colorado Springs. 

JoAnn fabric stores also hold monthly or bi-monthly knitting classes for kids ages eight and up, at seven locations in the Denver metro area.
