5280 Publishing Statement on Denver’s Black Lives Matter Protests

Black Lives Matter. That such a straightforward statement is in any way confusing or controversial painfully reminds us that we are a divided city.

At 5280 Publishing, we believe that well-reported, compelling stories have the power to change hearts and minds. That’s why we’re committed to listening to Colorado’s unheard communities of color and sharing their experiences with empathy and clarity. None of us can continue to look away from our country’s history of violence, oppression, and murder.

As parents, caretakers, and guardians, we have a unique opportunity to lay the foundation for the next generation of citizens and leaders. Colorado Parent is dedicated to sharing content that families can use in their daily lives to effect lasting change.

We must also do more than simply listen and react. We must continue to increase our own company’s diversity, actively pursuing and hiring journalists, artists, and other professionals from underrepresented backgrounds. Their insights will make our reporting smarter and the pages of our publications more welcoming to all readers.

Similarly, we will immediately review the many civic and charitable organizations we partner with to ensure that we are supporting and spotlighting those worthy organizations that are best serving the causes of racial, social, and economic justice.

We love Colorado. But we cannot fully enjoy all that it offers until it is a safe and just home for all of our neighbors. We must do better.
